How to Teach a Child to Read

When you introduce your child to books, you can teach them to read as well using these three tips.

Tip #1: Teach Letter Sounds
Most parents, when teaching their child to read, start with just the letter names. However, the best method, which is backed by science and research, is to teach them the letter sound along with the name of the letter. By teaching them both, the name and the sound at the same time, they will better make the connection and start reading faster.

Tip #2: From Left to Right
This may seem elementary but have you ever noticed how young children will skip around, they may look right, then left trying to figure things out for themselves. You as the parent teacher should instruct from left to right and top to bottom. Children were not born knowing this so instruct them in the correct method.

Tip #3: Final Consonant Blends
Teach final consonant blends first. Teaching words such “at” and “and” can lead your child directly to learning words that rhyme with these.

Here are some examples:
example, for “at”, you can have:

Lat
Pat
Mat
Cat
Sat
Bat
Spat
Chat

For “and”, you can have these rhyming words:

Sand
Band
Land
Hand
Stand
Bland
Brand
Grand
and so on…

Learning to read is a long process, but it doesn’t have to be a difficult process. Broken down into intuitive and logical steps, a child as young as two years old can learn to read, and older children can accomplish even more.
